Ripple Effects

Nothing in life happens inside of a vacuum. Meaning that everything we do has an effect on something or someone else. I often consider how my actions have affected others. Some of the times this makes me smile, and then there are situations where I know my actions have had a negative effect, sometimes without even intending them.

These ripple effects are often much more far reaching than we could have ever guessed they would be. Especially when it comes to people, a small act of kindness can have life altering consequences. I remember a small comment from a mentor over ten years ago, when my wife and I were still dating. We broke up for about a month, and she wrote me a letter, where she spoke honestly and lovingly, and she prayed for me. I told my mentor this, and his exact quote was, "You need to marry that girl. She loves Jesus, and she has a sincere heart."

Those comments caused me to reconsider my actions, and then, eventually reconcile with Shawna. If I had not listened to his advice, and continued to be stubborn about my feeling, I would have missed out on the most fulfilling relationship I have ever had. I would also not have the two additional children that I have now, and I could not bear to think of a day without hugs and snuggles with Levi and Eden.

There have been many negative ripple effects, but my goal is to always attempt to offset those by having more positive interactions. My goal in life is to leave a legacy of positive impacts that will out live me by several generations. That begins with my wife and children, and continues through friendships, as well as through ministry.

The opportunity to do something that will positively impact another person is available far more often than we think. A kind word, or some encouragement may turn an entire day around, which could lead to a better week, month, or even alter the course of a life. The ripple goes beyond what our eye can see. This is why it is important to always attempt to have a positive effect.

My mother passed away almost a year ago, and I think about her legacy of faith. I would not be where I am today without the encouragement and support of many people, my mother included. She loved the Lord, and still does, as I have full confidence that she is dancing with Him in heaven today.

One of the things that I loved about her approach was that she did not force religion on us, but allowed us to discover it for ourselves, and she was always open to our questions as we questioned the Bible. Her responses we always loving, and she directed us back to the Lord, but she did so by modeling His love for us, and not by condemning us. She actually encouraged us to think critically about our faith.

The real question is who are you having an impact on today? Know that what you are doing will go further than you think.
